Reno County Fire District #7 Dedicates New Turon Fire Station with Uncoupling Ceremony

Reno County Fire District #7 celebrated the official opening of its new fire station in Turon on Saturday with a traditional uncoupling ceremony, marking the facility’s readiness to serve the community. The event drew residents, firefighters, county officials, and partner agencies from across the region.
Fire Chief Eric Geesling expressed gratitude to the many individuals and organizations who helped bring the long-awaited project to completion. He acknowledged the Reno County Commissioners, Emergency Management, the City of Turon, and project contributors including Ward Davis Builders, who constructed the new building. Chief Geesling also noted that a similar sister station is nearing completion in Nickerson.
He praised members of Fire District 7 for spending countless hours moving equipment, setting up the station, and preparing for service. The Chief highlighted the generous donations made by community members and businesses—support that helped fund food and supplies for the open house. He thanked individuals who cooked chili, provided ingredients, baked rolls, and supplied other items needed for the event. He also noted contributions from firefighters’ families and one firefighter currently away on National Guard duty who had his family bring his very spicy chili.
Chief Geesling introduced members of District 7 standing with him and acknowledged their dedication. Representatives from Emergency Management and Reno County Commission Chairman Don Bogner and Vice-Chairman Ron Hirst were present and spoke briefly about the importance of investing in safe, modern facilities that protect both the community and volunteer firefighters. They emphasized that volunteers and their families deserve great appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
He further recognized firefighters from surrounding jurisdictions—including Arlington, Sylvia, Stafford County, and Pretty Prairie—who regularly respond across county lines and work cooperatively with District 7. Retired firefighters and dispatchers were also acknowledged. Chief Geesling reminded the audience that dispatchers are essential and he praised them as "the glue" of emergency response.
Updates on Fire District Consolidation
Chief Geesling explained that beginning January 1, all fire districts within Reno County will be officially consolidated under Reno County Fire District #1.
As part of this transition:
District 7 will become Station 70.
The new standardized numbering and dispatch system will help ensure the closest, most appropriate apparatus and personnel respond to emergencies anywhere in the county.
Consolidation improves training consistency and scene coordination across all stations.
Firefighters throughout the county now train together more often, meaning crews are familiar with each other’s methods and can work together more safely and effectively.
He stressed that these changes will enhance community safety, reduce response times, and strengthen support among all the county’s fire stations.
Chief Geesling closed by thanking everyone who attended and reaffirming District #7’s commitment to serving the public with professionalism and dedication.
About the Uncoupling Ceremony
A fire department uncoupling ceremony is a traditional, symbolic alternative to a ribbon-cutting that dedicates a new station by separating two coupled lengths of hose, signifying the facility’s official opening.
