Giving up driving can be very difficult for most people. Driving offers freedom and control, a sense of self-esteem and independence. However, concerns arise about the ability to drive safely.

Indicators of Impaired Driving

  • Getting lost in familiar places
  • Failure to follow traffic signs and speed limits
  • Making turns too wide or too tight
  • Poor judgment of distance or slow decision making in traffic
  • Stopping before intersections
  • Parking inappropriately, hitting or driving over curbs
  • Fender-bender accidents or near misses, scrapes on car, garage or mailbox

  • Have regular check-ups - yes that includes hearing and eye exams
  • Maintain your health - yes that includes an exercise program
  • Review your medications - yes medications can affect your driving
  • Reduce noise in the car - yes the radio and passengers can be distractions
  • Review long distance driving and plan rest stops - yes allow plenty of time
  • Don't use a cell phone while driving - yes the cell phone and other mobile devices are distractions
