Election Worker Information

Election Day Assistance

On Election Day, over 200 election workers are needed to serve the voters at the polls in Reno County. This is a great opportunity to serve your community and to be involved in the election process. You may join the Election Worker Team by completing this Election Worker Application and returning it to the County Clerks Office, 125 W. 1st Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67501. You may also contact our office by phone at 620-694-2732 or by fax at 620-694-2534. 


Students who will be at least 16 years of age at the time of the election are invited to serve as election workers and may apply by contacting the office listed above.

Qualifications

  • Resident of Reno County, Kansas
  • Registered to vote at current address (unless 16 or 17)
  • Complete 2 hours of training
  • Available for the complete day

Hours

  • Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • All election workers report to their assigned work site on Election Day no later than 6 a.m. to prepare for 7 a.m. opening of the polls.
  • Following the close of the polls at 7 p.m., all election workers assist the supervising judge in closing down the polling site.

Election Boards

The election boards are responsible for the election process at each polling place. Election boards are comprised of a supervising judge and a minimum of two election workers. All election workers are required to complete two hours of training.

Supervising Judges

The supervising judge is the person in charge of the polling place and is responsible for the operation of the polling place. On the Monday preceding the election, the supervising judge picks up election supplies at election office, reviews the supervising judge procedure notebook, enters the name of Monday morning advance voters in registration book, calls the assigned election workers to confirm that each one will report on Election Day at 6 a.m. and notifies the election office of any prospective absences.

Election Day Duties

On Election Day, the supervising judge assigns the duties to the election board. All election workers arrange the polling place to receive voters and post all signs. The supervising judge officially opens the polls and manages the processing of voters. On election night, the supervising judge officially closes the polls by closing the doors to the polls at 7 p.m. but allows all voters who are in line at 7 p.m. to have the opportunity to vote.

The election workers assist the supervising judge and share responsibility for the operation of the polling site. They greet voters and assist at registration book. Following the close of the polls at 7 p.m., all election workers assist the supervising judge in closing the polling site.
